UK ID card scheme may be scrapped… or maybe not

when Gordon Brown takes over as prime minister from Tony Blair next month, Jack Straw signalled today, The Guardian reports. That is great news. At huge expense, the proposed ID-card scheme would have restricted the civil liberties of law-abiding citizens while doing little or nothing to combat the various problems it purports to solve: illegal migration, terrorism and so on. UPDATE: It looks like The Guardian story is actually wrong. The BBC reported today (12 May) that Gordon Brown wants to press ahead with the ID card scheme. Shame.
