At huge expense, the proposed ID-card scheme would have restricted the civil liberties of law-abiding citizens while doing little or nothing to combat the various problems it purports to solve: illegal migration, terrorism and so on. UPDATE: It looks like The Guardian story is actually wrong. The BBC reported today (12 May) that Gordon Brown wants to press ahead with the ID card scheme. Shame.
